Guide / Box & packaging styles / Chapter 2.8
Two-piece (lid and base) boxes.
A separate lid that lifts off a base: the classic gift box. Here's how two-piece boxes are made, which material to choose, and when they work for shipping as well as presentation.
The short answer
A two-piece box has two separate parts: a base and a lid that fits over it. Lifting the lid off feels like opening a gift, which is why the style is popular for gifts, clothing, shoes, hampers and premium products. Two-piece boxes come in three main materials: corrugated cardboard for strength, paperboard for a lighter retail box, and rigid board for a premium finish. We stock two-piece cardboard boxes in E flute, and paperboard lid and base gift boxes in 285gsm, all supplied flat.
How two-piece boxes are made
Most flat-packed two-piece boxes are two die-cut trays: a base and a slightly larger lid. Each folds up and locks into itself, so there's no glue or tape needed. The lid sits over the base with a little clearance so it lifts off smoothly.
Lids come in two depths. A full-depth lid covers the whole base, which gives a neat closed block and extra strength. A shallow lid covers only the top part of the base, which leaves the base colour showing and makes the lid easier to lift.
Rigid two-piece boxes are different: they're made from thick board wrapped in paper, and they arrive already formed. The rigid boxes chapter in this guide covers them in detail.
Choosing the material
| Material | What it's like | Best for | How it arrives |
|---|---|---|---|
| Corrugated cardboard (E flute) | Strong and light, with a natural kraft or white look | Clothing, gifts, hampers, products that are posted | Flat, folds and locks together |
| Paperboard (285gsm) | Thin, smooth and easy to print | Lighter retail products, chocolates, accessories | Flat, folds and locks together |
| Rigid board | Thick, solid and premium | Jewellery, luxury gifts, special editions | Already formed |
Can you post a two-piece box?
A corrugated two-piece box is strong enough to post on its own for many light and medium products. Because the lid isn't attached, seal it on two sides with a sticker or tape so it can't slide off in transit.
Paperboard and rigid two-piece boxes are best treated as presentation boxes. Pack them inside a shipping carton or mailer box with a little filler.

Start-up · under 100 units
A stock two-piece cardboard box with tissue and a sticker makes an easy, affordable gift box. Choose a size that fits your product snugly.
Order a sample and check how easily the lid lifts off with your product inside.
Growing · 100 to 2,499 units
If gifting or presentation is a big part of what you sell, consider a box with a clear lid to show the product, or a printed box with your logo.
Try this: seal the lid with a branded sticker. It holds the box closed and adds your brand.
Enterprise · 2,500 units and more
Specify the lid style, board and inserts for each product so every box looks the same. For posted orders, check how many presentation boxes fit in each shipping carton.
Test lid fit across a sample of boxes from each run.
Common mistakes
- 1Not securing the lid. A loose lid can slide off in transit. Seal it with stickers or tape suited to your carrier. Ribbon is a finishing touch, not a transit seal; use an outer carton where needed.
- 2Posting paperboard boxes on their own. Thin paperboard can crush in a courier network. Put it in an outer carton.
- 3A lid that's too tight. If the lid is hard to lift, the unboxing feels awkward. Test with the product inside.
- 4Forgetting the insert. Small products can slide around inside a large lid and base box. Add tissue, filler or an insert.
