Guide / Box & packaging styles / Chapter 2.11
Collapsible (flat-pack) rigid boxes.
All the weight and finish of a rigid box, delivered flat. Here's how collapsible rigid boxes work, why they save space and freight, and what to check before you choose them.
The short answer
A collapsible rigid box is made from the same thick, wrapped board as a traditional rigid box, but it's designed to fold flat for delivery and storage. When you need it, you fold it into shape and it holds firm. The walls are usually fixed with a strip of self-adhesive tape or tabs; on magnetic styles, the magnet only closes the lid, it doesn't hold the walls in place. You get the premium feel of a rigid box while using a fraction of the storage space. Our collapsible boxes are magnetic gift boxes, stocked in a large hamper size and available custom printed from 250 units.
How a collapsible rigid box works
A traditional rigid box is glued into its final shape at the factory, so it arrives formed and takes up the same space empty as full. A collapsible rigid box is made in flat panels joined by hinges in the wrapping paper. It ships and stores flat.
To assemble one, you fold the sides up into position and fix them, usually by peeling a liner off a strip of self-adhesive tape and pressing the panels together. Once formed, the box feels like any other rigid box: solid, square and heavy.
Why choose collapsible
- Storage space. A stack of flat boxes takes up far less room than the same number of formed boxes. That matters if you store packaging at home, in a small studio or in a busy warehouse.
- Freight. Flat boxes travel more efficiently, which helps on larger orders.
- The same premium feel. Once assembled, a collapsible box looks and feels like a rigid box, with a hinged magnetic lid.
- Large sizes. Hamper and gift boxes are often large, which is where flat packing saves the most space.

Start-up · under 100 units
If you sell hampers or gift sets from home or a small studio, collapsible boxes are much easier to store. Start with stock boxes and a ribbon or sticker.
Order a sample and time how long it takes to assemble one.
Growing · 100 to 2,499 units
For seasonal gifting, a custom printed collapsible box with your logo gives a premium finish without filling your storeroom. Plan your order well before peak season.
Try this: assemble boxes in batches before a busy period so packing day runs smoothly.
Enterprise · 2,500 units and more
For large gifting programs, collapsible boxes reduce storage and freight across thousands of units. Specify the size, print, finish and assembly method. Our custom collapsible magnetic boxes take 4–6 weeks from artwork approval.

Common mistakes
- 1Not pressing the tape firmly. The self-adhesive strip needs firm, even pressure along its length to hold the box square.
- 2Assembling too early. Once formed, the box takes up full space. Assemble as you need them, or in planned batches.
- 3Folding along the wrong edge. Follow the hinge lines. Folding against them can crease the wrapping paper.
- 4Choosing too large a size. Leave room for filler, but don't let the product slide around.
